A Case with AnalysisSetting New Trends in Business Education in IndiaAdvisorsAdvisor – Prof. Rajeev SharmaCo-advisor – Prof. Vijaya Sherry Chand Ravi J. Matthai Centre for Educational Innovation, IIM-Ahmedabad http://www.iimahd.ernet.in/faculty/areas_rjmcei.htm Submitted BySanjeev Bhalla, PGPX-IVSanjeev Bhalla has over a decade of experience in Technology and consulting in India and abroad. This year, he has taken a break to pursue PGP-X program at IIMA. BackgroundThe Indian business education sector has seen an explosive growth in the last two decades with the number of business schools growing over ten folds. There are over 1600 business schools across India with an annual intake of 90000 students. The sector has not only seen growth in terms of the number of student intake but a spread in the offerings and specializations as well. There are specializations available from general management to retail, petroleum and insurance. Inspite of the large number of MBA aspirants in the country, there is an intense competition amongst B-schools to attract the best students. It is a big challenge for the newer institutes to differentiate themselves from the dozens of other B-schools opening every month.ObjectiveThis study takes a look at some of the B-schools which have been founded by individuals who are first generation entrepreneurs and who have differentiated their institutions from the crowd. The study looks at the vision of the founders, how it was used to create a unique offering and how this vision was translated into results. What have the founders done to communicate the vision and values, develop a dependable second line of command with the right balance of control and autonomy? The various aspects of these B-schools viz. student selection methodology, curriculum, pedagogy, industry interface, faculty selection process, overall compensation package, benefits and development of faculty, research focus, placement process, infrastructure, branding etc. would be studied to analyse how the vision of their founders has created this unique offering. The business schools selected for this project would be differentiated from majority of the business schools.MethodologyThe study will identify 2-4 business education institutes which have been founded by individuals who are first generation entrepreneurs. The overall structure of the programs offered by these institutions along with the infrastructure and entire eco-system would be studied and documented. The founders of the institutions would be interviewed to understand their thought process in creating the differentiating factors and how they have made sure that their vision is translated in the functioning of the institutes. This would be further validated by interviewing faculty and students and reviewing feedback for the institutes in the media and industry. The analysis would consolidate the best practices of these practitioners and draw a roadmap for aspiring business schools to refer to. Indus World School of Business figures in the caseIndus World School of Business is one of the four B-Schools in India selected by Sanjeev and his advisors, for detailed study to create the case. The unique learning eco-system at IWSB that stokes entrepreneurial spirit sets it apart from other Business Schools. Sanjeev visited the IWSB campus to interview Prof. Ishwar Dayal, Satya and other members of the faculty, interact with students; and study the entrepreneurial learning eco-system. |
