Green specifications:

The building comprises of a reinforced concrete framed structure with in fill walls of sand-lime fly-ash blocks laid in ‘rat trap bond’ fashion which is different from an English bond (widely used in India). The normal red clay bricks are not echo friendly since they are made of living soil. On the other hand sand-lime fly-ash bricks are made from inert material and re-cycled matter. The rat trap bond has less joints and hence less use of cement mortar (cement manufacture is a huge guzzler of energy) minimizing the chances of ingress of moisture from outside. Since there are full-length vertical cavities at intervals the thermal insulation is enhanced on two accounts. One due to the type of bricks i.e. sand-lime-fly-ash bricks and the other due to air entrapment in the hollows.

The water proofing of the base slab and the basement walls will be done by a membrane which uses high swelling and self curing properties of sodium bentonite to form a low permeable membrane.  The life of this membrane is long and sodium bentonite is nothing but a form of clay with very effective expanding and sealing properties.

The window glazing shall be with high quality glass to permit light transmission without letting the heat to pass through. In addition fins will be provided in the windows to break direct sun rays.

A rain water harvesting system is planned so that it will be put to use in landscape use, or cycle through plumbing to the wash areas, or recharge of the under ground.

An efficient storm water harvesting system is also planned to keep all areas free of water logging and slush. This water is planned to be stored and reused at a later time.

The kitchen and the wash water will be purified and recycled in to the plumbing system for judicious use in landscape tree watering, toilet flush water etc.
Together, with the three systems, the amount of reuse will reduce the dependence for supply of large quantities of fresh water for running the institutes.
